Royal Underwood

Welcome

Whenever I sit down at my old Olympia SM8 portable or the computer keyboard, I remind myself that I walk a precarious path—one well-worn by numerous eminent writers who’ve produced fine literary works. Writing can be an undertaking laced with considerable doubt; however, the solution is simple: entertain the reader.

As for creativity, someone once said nothing happens in a vacuum—if that were true, I’d never have to change the disposable bag on my old Kirby G4.

Royal Underwood represents the vessel I navigate through shifting seas of thought and imagination—a craft built from lived moments, stray observations, and half-remembered dreams. Within it, I carry stories that bridge the familiar and the strange, ideas that invite reflection, and words that aim to linger long after the page is turned.

In my debut novel, RED PAINT, I explore the mysterious boundaries between this world and the cosmic unknown, weaving a tale of dimensional rifts, otherworldly beings, and the supernatural.

Red Paint

Drawing upon inspiration from my Anishinaabe wife, and more than four decades living and working among American Indians, RED PAINT blends science fiction, native culture, and fantasy to evoke adventure and wonder for the reader..

Set in post-World War II, Red Paint is an uplifting adventure of courage and love in which a boy, born during a deadly New England blizzard, is assisted and encouraged by local Woodland Indians, and later, mysteriously led to the far west of Montana, where he is mentored by elders of the Blackfeet Nation, to help humanity resist an evil enemy.

  • Speculative literary fiction that weaves science fiction with Indigenous cultural traditions
  • A post‑World War II coming‑of‑age journey from New England to the American West
